Competency #5: Super-value Creation

Edison realized early in his career that inventing things for the sake of “being creative” was not going to help him stay in business.  His first patented invention, a vote recorder, worked perfectly, but ultimately failed commercially because the market to which he had targeted it – the Massachusetts legislature – didn’t want it!

Edison realized it was critically important to provide innovations that created super-value for a target group of customers.  He created more than just individual products or services – he created entire platforms.  Edison understood how to delight consumers with his market-moving brand.
